Louise Kelley, PT, MSPT, received her Master of Science in Physical Therapy in 1989 from the Emory University School of Medicine. She began her career at the National Rehabilitation Hospital in Washington, DC, where she developed expertise in the treatment of patients presenting with lower extremity amputation and paralysis from stroke. She worked extensively alongside Lauro Halstead, M.D., a world-leading authority on post-polio syndrome.
She continued her career in the outpatient setting, treating patients presenting with a variety of musculoskeletal dysfunction, including low back, neck, shoulder, and lower extremity syndromes. Her specialized caseload included runners, musicians, dancers, gymnasts, the pre-natal and post-partum population, and those recovering from breast cancer surgery. Louise established an aquatic rehabilitation program for athletes with acute injuries and post-surgical patients unable to tolerate land-based therapy.
Louise has taken numerous coursework in osteopathic manual techniques and postural restoration principles. She has applied these approaches to the treatment of the professional athletes at the Legg-Mason Tennis Tournament and the Women’s Tennis Association as well as many junior players the region.
Continuing her interest in women’s health issues, Louise studied the evaluation and treatment of women presenting with incontinence and pelvic pain. She presented a seminar on incontinence titled “Dribbling is for Basketball, Not Running” to the Montgomery County Road Runners and plans to further educate women on this treatable condition.
As a former competitive runner, Louise underwent her own rehabilitation for numerous injuries. The process spawned her interest in the human body and the healing process and sparked her passion for injury management and prevention. She has presented numerous seminars to local running clubs and written several articles on this topic for running publications, and she served as a mentor for the USA Track and Field’s Emerging Elite Athlete program.
Louise maintains licensure in the state of Maryland and the District of Columbia.
